Biography: He has interest in ear and hearing disorders was established early in his career and he completed the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS), specialising in Otolaryngology, in 1990. He was awarded the Athelstan and Amy Saw Medical Scholarship to undertake fellowships in ear and skull base surgery at Cambridge, UK and Pittsburgh, USA, and returned to Australia to take up an appointment at St Vincent’s Hospital campus in Sydney.

Biography: She graduated in medicine at the Maastricht University in 2007 and subsequently became a research fellow at Sydney University, Australia and later on at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston, USA. In that period, she worked on the development of a new vestibular test, the ocular VEMP. She returned to the Netherlands 18 months later. In 2009, she started her Ph.D project at the otolaryngology, head and neck department of the University Medical Center Utrecht and finished her thesis on the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of bilateral cochlear implantation in February 2016. Dr. Smulders was trained to become an ENT surgeon at the University Medical Center Utrecht between 2010 and 2015. Dr. Smulders is married and has two children.
