Mr Scott Caplin

Biography: He has been a consultant in Swansea since 2003, specialising in advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) and oesophago-gastric surgery. He studied at Sheffield University with postgraduate surgical training in Sheffield, Leeds, Manchester and London. He speaks fluent French and studied cancer surgery in Lausanne, Switzerland, and spent one year working in Paris on an advanced surgical fellowship. He has performed surgery for obesity for a number of years and was involved with bringing the NHS obesity surgery unit (WIMOS) to Swansea. His practice now consists almost entirely of advanced laparoscopic procedures and obesity surgery, being one of only two surgeons performing obesity operations in the NHS in Wales. He regularly teaches on all aspects of obesity surgery and has appeared on BBC radio Wales and Radio 5 live. His main interests away from work are relaxing with his young family and all aspects of cycling, along with wishing he could play a musical instrument.

Biography: He was appointed as an NHS Consultant Anaesthetist in 1999 and he has been performing anaesthesia for bariatric surgery since that time. He is the lead Consultant Anaesthetist at the Welsh Institute of Metabolic and Obesity Surgery (WIMOS) based at Morriston Hospital in Swansea which he developed alongside its founders, Professor John Baxter and Mr Jonathan Barry. The most experienced anaesthetist in Wales in the speciality of weight loss surgery, he has appeared on a number of TV and radio programmes in relation to his specialist interest. Born and raised in South Wales, James qualified from Southampton University Medical School before undertaking postgraduate training in the teaching hospitals of Southampton, Manchester and Sheffield. He is one of the founder members of the Society of Bariatric Anaesthetists (SOBA) and a member of European Society For Anaesthesia for Obese Patients (ESPCOP). He is married with three children and in his spare time he enjoys spending time with his growing family.

Biography: He is a consultant laparoscopic bariatric (weight loss) surgeon at the Welsh Institute of Metabolic and Obesity Surgery, Morriston Hospital, Swansea. He is affiliated with the following organisations: General Medical Council, British Medical Association, Medical Protection Society, Welsh Surgical Society, The Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons, British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society and International Federation of the Surgery of Obesity.
